Understanding how we learn and store memory is of fundamental interest for basic research, but also carries important translational significance in the context of brain dysregulations, such as mental retardation, cognitive decline with age, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The formation of a neural memory includes the crucial phase of memory consolidation, which requires behaviorally induced alterations in the availability of functional mRNAs.  In this project, you will investigate how the stress protein Gadd45a regulates stress-related memory formation by specifically stabilizing extended 3’UTRs (3´ untranslated regions; Aparisi Rey et al EMBO Rep. (2019)).  You will apply RNA-seq and Omics approaches and analyze the role of 3’UTRs in synaptic mRNA localization in neuronal cultures, employing confocal microscopy.
