IT System Administrator Linux full or part time (m/f/d) (#CFIT06)

IMB (www.imb.de) is a research institute on the campus of Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany. It is generously funded by the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation and the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Our research focuses on the biology of the cell nucleus and ranges from the molecular level to organismic, systems and computational approaches. We conduct basic research in gene regulation, genome stability, and the biology of aging. Researchers at IMB are supported by strong core facilities that offer state-of-the-art services in bioinformatics, cytometry, genomics, histology & microscopy, proteomics, and protein production. The IT Department is looking for a highly motivated and experienced IT System Administrator Linux (m/f/d) join their team.

The position

The administrator will join an existing and experienced team and focus their work on server administration as well as various related services for the institute and researchers.  

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Perform basic server administration for the IMB (Debian & Ubuntu Linux, Windows Server)
  • Maintain and support IMB’s own HPC cluster
  • Configure network services (Apache, Nginx, NFS, Samba, SSH, LDAP, Docker, Slurm)
  • Install/package scientific software as well as virtual environments/containers
  • Administer DBMS (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MS SQL Server)
  • Carry out network and firewall configuration, as well as data archiving (Tivoli Storage Manager)
  • Provide Linux support to end-users

Minimum Requirements

  • Extensive experience with Linux server administration
  • Scripting skills in Bash and programming skills

Desired Requirements

  • Practical experience in the area of high-performance computing (HPC) is advantageous
  • Service-oriented, flexible, reliable, and pro-active
  • Outstanding organizational and communicative abilities
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English
